Forensic Psychology is the application of the science and profession of psychology to questions and issues relating to law and the legal system. The word “forensic” comes from the Latin word “forensis,” meaning “of the forum,” where the law courts of ancient Rome were held.

Although forensic psychology isn't always as exciting as TV makes it out to be, it is still a very rewarding job. Forensic psychologists are called into court rooms to help evaluate defendants, to asses and give their professional opinion if the defendant(s) is mentally insane, and if their mental disorder had a part to play in the crimes they committed.

Forensic psychologists are scientist-practitioners. They apply psychological knowledge, theory and skills to the understanding and functioning of legal and criminal justice systems, and to conducting research in relevant areas. The profession of forensic psychology continues to evolve and develop. Without doubt this is a reflection of the importance of psychology as a whole. It also highlights the particular wide-ranging benefits forensic psychology brings to society, not only when working with the perpetrators of offending, but when engaging with forensic organisations, victims, the public and government.
